2023 JFM-Flow China Symposium: from fundamentals to applied mechanics

We were excited to hold the third JFM/Flow 2023 China Symposium in Hefei in July 2023, which was co-hosted with the School of Engineering Science at the University of Science and Technology of China. Over 180 experts and scholars from dozens of universities gathered in Hefei, with online live participants exceeding 26,000 views.
Professor Luo Xisheng, Director of the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, first gave the welcome address. James Pan, Director of Academic Publishing (Asia) at Cambridge University Press, was invited to introduce Journal of Fluid Mechanics (JFM) and Flow, expressing special thanks to the University of Science and Technology of China.

A fantastic day started with Professor Charles Meneveau’s (JFM Deputy editor) talk “On local features of the energy cascade in isotropic turbulence.” Following this, Professor Wang Lianping (JFM Associate editor) and Professor Lv Cunjing (Flow Associate editor) each provided their perspectives on publishing academic papers in JFM and Flow.
Speakers from across China, including the University of Science and Technology of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Beihang University, Lanzhou University, and Southern University of Science and Technology, to name but a few. Thank you to all our speakers for their enlightening talks.

During the conference, attendees engaged in face-to-face dialogues with the editorial board members of JFM and Flow. This included Professors Wu Ziniu, Wang Lianping, and Lv Cunjing, associate editors in China, and Professors C. P. Caulfield, Carl Meinhart, and Shu Takagi. Together, they addressed questions from experts and scholars in fluid mechanics about the journals’ development directions, inclusion status, review processes, and more.
The symposium also included a poster display session with a total of 41 high-quality posters submitted. The posters by Shen Weiyu and Liang Yu stood out, winning the “Best Poster” award. Eight scholars, including Guo Jianfeng, Ma Xue, Du Zengzhi, Li Chao, Wang Miaomiao, Xie Jiafeng, Zhang Chunyu, and Zhang Xurui, received the “Outstanding Poster” award.

Professor Si Ting, the Vice Dean of the School of Engineering Science at the University of Science and Technology of China:
He expressed his gratitude to offline and online experts and scholars for their attention, support, and participation in this seminar and to the organising committee’s teachers and volunteer students for their hard work. He wished everyone continuous innovation and the fostering of friendships in their future career and life, contributing to the high-quality development of research in fluid mechanics.
Professor Wang Lianping, Associate Editor of JFM:
He pointed out that the academic atmosphere of this seminar was robust, the presentations were diverse and brilliant, and innovative achievements were continually emerging. He congratulated the conference on its complete success. He encouraged the attending experts and scholars to actively engage in fundamental scientific research and academic exchanges, continuously achieve outstanding results, serve the country’s significant needs, publish high-level papers, and invest more in experimental and theoretical aspects, promoting a balanced and healthy development of the discipline.

Finally, we must thank our excellent hosts at the School of Engineering Science at the University of Science and Technology of China and the attentive and engaging attendees for two inspiring days of fluid mechanics.
We truly appreciate the time taken by all the speakers! A big thanks from the organising committee!
