The new leadership of the Asian Society of International Law

Message from the AsianSIL President

Dear Honourable Members of the Executive Council of the AsianSIL and Distinguished Colleagues,

It is my great honour to have gained your trust and be elected as the eighth President of the AsianSIL and it is also my privilege to inherit the success of the AsianSIL from the previous Presidents of the Society.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Professor Antony Anghie – the former Secretary-General and the Secretariat of the previous term for your tireless assistance for the Executive Council of the Society. Furthermore, I would like to thank all Members of the Executive Council from the last term for your valuable contribution to the development of the AsianSIL.

In the last three years, the world has witnessed a sequence of shocks, from the distress of the COVID-19 pandemic to the bitter conflicts in many parts of this continent. Our region and our Society have shown our vigorous efforts to foster the development of international law through a variety of activities. Two successful biennial conferences, one inter-sessional conference as well as a significant number of academic workshops and courses have been organized by the AsianSIL or under the auspices of the AsianSIL. Our top-tier journal, the Asian Journal of International Law, continues to be a forum for scholars from around Asia and the world to contribute their expertise to the field of international law.

In this next term of the Executive Council, as a new President of the Society, I promise to continue the success and further enhance the growth of the Society. I hope to receive the support and contribution from all Members of the Executive Council so we could make this happen.

In two years from now, we look forward to seeing all of you, a part of the AsianSIL and the growth of international law, in the next biennial conference in 2025 in Hanoi, Viet Nam. I genuinely believe that the spirit of the international law and the success of the previous conferences will be revived in this conference. A thousand-year-old capital city of Viet Nam is now ready to host this prestigious event of AsianSIL.

I wish all of you good health and success in your career!

Thank you so much!

Dr. PHAM Lan Dung

President, Asian Society of International Law

Message from the AsianSIL Secretary-General

Thank you everyone for your confidence and trust. It is an honour and privilege to serve as the Secretary-General of AsianSIL. I want to take this opportunity to thank Antony Anghie, the former Secretary-General, and AsianSIL members with whom I have worked over the past few years, especially at the last conference and at the various junior faculty workshops. Thank you also to those who have agreed to take on specific positions of responsibility, especially within AsianSIL’s governing bodies. I hope to continue having your support so that we can cultivate and promote international law perspectives and concerns from the region. Given recent developments, investments in the rule of law and justice are ever more important today. I hope that we can work together to strengthen the society’s different initiatives, include more diverse voices. It is my hope that AsianSIL can give more focus to voices from less represented Asian states and from practice. AsianSIL should also strive to encourage open critical and constructive debate among Asia’s international law experts and with those from other regions.  Thank you once again.

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly highlight some of AsianSIL’s initiatives. Every two years, AsianSIL organizes the Asian Biennial Conference. The 2025 conference will be held in Vietnam, under the leadership of Asian SIL President Dr. Pham Lan Dzung. In between these conferences, AsianSIL also organizes an intersessional conference. The 2024 AsianSIL Intersessional Conference will be hosted by Kazakhstan. Apart from these conferences, Asian SIL has also set up interest groups, the Asian SIL Voices blog, and the Asian SIL 101 You Tube channel. Many of these initiatives were set up by former AsianSIL Secretary-General, Antony Anghie, to whom the organization owes a huge debt. These initiatives have been put in place to benefit members, especially early career scholars. I want to thank AsianSIL members who have stepped forward to run these initiatives. They may reach out to AsianSIL members to ask for help and contributions. I hope you will support them.

While international law has sought to be more inclusive, much more can be done to uplift and promote the diverse voices and needs of our region. I believe that AsianSIL, with the help of its members, can do much to meet this challenge.

Dr. CHEAH W.L.

Secretary-General, Asian Society of International Law
