Announcing the VIII Annual SPS Lecture

Join Social Policy and Society for their VIII annual journal event, where leading experts in social policy will share insights and research across diverse policy areas, including employment, housing, pensions, family, tax and social policy and climate justice.

This year’s event will take place on Friday 6th June, 2025, at the University of Derby. This will start with an in-person networking lunch from 12-1pm, with the presentations following online from 1pm until 3.30pm. The event is supported by the Social Policy Association and Cambridge University Press, and will be hosted by the Centre for Applied Social Sciences, Policy, Practice and Research (CASSPPR) at the University of Derby.

The roundtable discussions will focus on the theme “One year of Labour in government and its impact on Social Policy“. We will feature engaging presentations and thought-provoking discussions from members of the SPA (Social Policy Association) Policy Groups, covering the following topics:

  • Introduction to the event – Prof. Alessio D’Angelo (University of Derby), Prof. Zoe Irving and Dr. Enrico Reuter (University of York)
  • Labour’s manifesto commitments to social policy – Dr. Kevin Farnsworth (University of York)
  • New direction in family policy – Dr. Linzi Ladlow (University of Lincoln)
  • Pension inequalities and policy responses – Dr. Hayley James (Aston University)
  • Labour’s policies on taxation – Dr. Sally Ruane (De Montfort University)
  • Labour’s Welfare and Employment strategy – Dr/ Nye Cominetti (Resolution Foundation)
  • A critical assessment of Housing policies – Prof. Peter Matthews (University of Sterling)
