Cambridge Materials: Health Q&A with Vincent Rotello

Professor Vincent Rotello UMass, Amherst, USA is the recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of Cambridge Materials: Health. To celebrate the launch of the Cambridge Materials journal, they participated in a Q&A to discuss the aims of the journals and their hopes for their role as EiC.
Q. Why will the Journals be important, and what role do you feel they will play both in the scientific community but also beyond that in terms of addressing societal challenges?
Vincent Rotello: I believe the integrated structure of the Cambridge Materials family will build important bridges between current scientific silos. These bridges will facilitate new answers to some of the biggest issues society is currently facing.
Q. What are your hopes for the type of content the Journals will attract? (i.e. what types of research do you hope to attract and why? Quality? Themes etc)
VR: My goal for Cambridge Materials: Health is to take a broad view of science, focusing on impact and working hard to avoid disciplinary ‘local minima’. We will publish papers that answer unanswered questions and help address unmet needs in the broad areas of therapeutics, imaging and diagnosis.
Q. Can you explain what you are most looking forward to as part of your role?
VR: I am excited both by working with the other Cambridge Materials journals and by building community through discussions of policy, sustainability and societal impact.
Q. And finally: what difference do you feel these Journals could make to the literature already available?
VR: These journals could make a significant difference by offering integration across challenges coupled with the incorporation of matters of interest to the materials community.

Cambridge Materials: Health focuses on research on biomaterials, medical device innovations, and health-related applications of materials science, with an emphasis on accessibility, ethics, and public health.
The journal aligns with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Cambridge Materials: Health is part of Cambridge Materials, a suite of four journals, each focused on a particular global challenge – circularity, energy, health, water – and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Cambridge Materials journals publish high-quality research that integrates innovations in materials science and engineering with environmental, life cycle, economic, social, and policy considerations, thereby bridging knowledge gaps and supporting impactful solutions.
