What do you enjoy most about being a sales rep and working with educators in Higher Ed?
I love working on university campuses because they are beautiful. Most of my campuses have beautiful old buildings, landscaped gardens or gorgeous, grand old leafy trees. I also love working where education is valued. I love talking to instructors about their research or about how they motivate students. I also love being a little levity in the day of an instructor; I like to come in with a smile and a positive attitude and bring a little laughter or a smile to their day. I also love to eavesdrop on students. I’ve heard the most interesting bits of conversations over the years. Lastly, I like to see what’s in style on campus. LOL.
Can you share a funny or memorable moment you’ve had while on the road meeting with professors in Higher Ed?
This story was told back to me by a marketing manager years after the fact. While I was working with Macmillan, one of the Psychology marketing managers came up to Canada to work with me. We had done a killer presentation (Myers, Psychology) to a huge faculty. It went very well and we had been working hard to prepare and then present. As we were driving away from campus, I said to the marketing manager, “I’m famished, I need a snack.” She said that she was famished too and thought that we were going to stop for some fast food, maybe a burger and fries. I then asked her to reach into my knapsack and get my Ziploc bag of almonds and dried apricots. She was very disappointed because that was not her idea of a snack!
Can you share a hobby or interest outside of work that helps you recharge after work?
Mostly I like to play team sports in my spare time. I do some solo sports like yoga and dancing, but it’s the team sports that recharge me. I love being with others and working towards a common goal. I also really enjoy the social aspect of playing on a team, the kicking the ball around in warm up while chatting and catching up on their lives. Or sitting in the change room and talking about what’s going on in our lives. To me playing a sport satisfies the emotional, physical and social parts of me and that’s what really recharges me.
