Altmetrics on CJO – tracking and analysing online activity
Functionality updates in 2012 saw Cambridge Journals Online (CJO) adopt a new measure of article level metrics. Applied to a select number of Cambridge Journals, Altmetric provides detailed analyses of the online activity surrounding scholarly literature. By tracking social activity around an article, Altmetric gives readers an accurate picture of its online reach. Click here for an example.
With the sharing of articles between peers being increasingly seen as an indicator of an article’s impact and relevance, this means of quantifying social usage adds credibility to online readership. Altmetric collates an article’s popularity by monitoring the quality and quantity of attention that it receives online, and giving it a unique score.
Altmetric then marks the article with a clear visual key, breaking down its influence into segments each denoting where it has been viewed or shared. This gives a comprehensive overview of social reach, allowing readers and authors alike to see how and where the article is being discussed online.
Altmetric has served as a valuable addition to CJO, allowing our users to better engage with scholarly literature online. This year will see yet more Cambridge Journals adopt the Altmetric system.
