Picking each other up: The importance of feminist thinking – now, more than ever

Over its 30 year history, Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy has aspired to be a venue for the feminist writing that gives words to experience, articulates the meanings of injustice, and gives those committed to feminist thinking and practice the strength to go on.

Today, we are gripped again by a sense of the importance of such work, in a context in which feminist gains remain fragile. Feminist demands are achieving a public urgency, international scope and broad visibility through the #MeToo, #TimesUp, and #NiUnaMenos social-media campaigns; massive women’s marches, including protests against femicide in many parts of the world and, in the US, the unprecedented numbers of women running for public office are also gaining traction.

Antiracist activists and those supporting immigrants and refugees are achieving remarkable public visibility internationally. Simultaneously, rightwing nationalist movements in many parts of the world are making antifeminist commitments an explicit and central part of their public platforms. Where authoritarian political movements are on the rise, we also find disdain for thinking, organized lying, and along with these a repudiation of the moral worth of the vulnerable. Hannah Arendt argued that the counterweight to such conditions is an “enlarged mentality” that is achieved only through putting oneself into the shoes of the other, of many others, and thinking from the perspective that engaging many perspectives enables.

Times like these intensify the urgency of picking each other up through committed feminist thinking and practice, renewing our commitment to publish work from feminists writing from different perspectives, from different geographical locations, with different objectives and central concerns. The editors and staff of Hypatia are thrilled to be partnering with Cambridge University Press in this endeavor.

Hypatia is new to Cambridge for 2020.
