10 Benefits of our Higher Education website, for Librarians

In August, Higher Education from Cambridge University Press fully launched offering high-quality textbooks and learning resources with key functionality for institutions across the globe.

We created Higher Education to meet librarians, students and staff’s needs and accelerated the launch date to accommodate the increase in remote learning in the next academic year. But how can Higher Education benefit your library?

Textbooks on Cambridge Core becomes the Higher Education website

Cambridge Core has been the home to our digital textbooks up until the launch of Higher Education. But, what new features does Higher Education have to offer?

Higher Education is built on the same platform as Cambridge Core (so it will be familiar for all users) but it has key functionality specifically created with digital textbooks in mind that has been requested in feedback from our librarians via the Cambridge Librarian panel. This includes offline reading, highlighting, bookmarking, printing, annotation capabilities and full text searching within the textbook content.

Remote Learning

The launch of Higher Education was brought forward to accommodate the increase in remote learning after the COVID-19 outbreak. One of the biggest benefits of Higher Education is that it is ideal for remote learning.

Librarians can purchases individual textbooks or collections so students can access them online via their institutional authentication and a personal login. Therefore, if students cannot physically come back into the library, they can access the textbook anywhere and have the same experience with the e-textbook as the print version due to being able to annotate and bookmark pages. Because they have their own personal account, students can access their notes, bookmarks and highlights at any time on any device.

Also, any number of students can access a book at the same time.

Access to high-quality Textbooks

Whilst our entire textbook collection of over 750 titles has not been made digital yet, every week new textbooks are added to ensure that by the end of the year our entire e-textbook collection will be on Higher Education.

There are a range of textbooks on offer in 17 different subjects. As new textbooks are published, each will be added to the appropriate collection.

Offline reading

Another benefit of Higher Education’s functionality is the ability to read the textbooks offline. Students, librarians and staff will have no need for WiFi as they can read their textbooks offline via our Apps once they have been downloaded.

This functionality enables user to access up to 20 textbooks whenever or wherever they are once it has been downloaded to their bookshelf.  Please visit this page for more information.

Annotation, Bookmarks, Citations

With new functionality, accessed via a personal account, users can directly annotate onto their version of the e-textbook without impacting other users also reading the book.

There is also the opportunity to export citations on multiple pages throughout Higher Education, as well as bookmark specific pages within the textbooks.

Compatibility

Our team has ensured that all of the Higher Education functionality is compatible with the latest technology both online and via Apps for Windows, iOS and Android.

Print/Copy & Paste

Account holders can already print up to 15% of a textbook by page range. In the coming months, you will be able to directly copy and paste up to 15% of the word count of the textbooks, which will save students, staff and researcher’s time and effort in their academic or research work.

Access to the HE website is controlled by the usual Cambridge Core institutional authentication, plus a separate personal account login for the individual user. It is this personal account which enables the enhanced functionality for each user.

Redirects for URLs and DOIs are now in place from our textbooks’ previous home on Cambridge Core to preserve seamless access for our users. There is no need to amend any existing links or records.

However, new KBART title lists and MARC records tailored to your institution can be downloaded from your organisation account area on Cambridge Core.

Flexible access options

Cambridge textbooks are now available through an annual lease, with title-by-title pricing and for the first time, in collections: the full collection, all HSS textbooks, all STM titles and 17 individual subject collections.

Pricing is not based on course size, and allows for unlimited concurrent user access for your institution. All collections offer a reduced price per title.

More information about access options can be found on this page.
