Cambridge University Press to partner with the Linguistic Society of America

Cambridge University Press and the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) are excited to announce that Cambridge University Press will publish the Society’s journals Language and Phonological Data and Analysis from 2026 and the Proceedings of the Linguistic Society of America from 2027.

Under the arrangement, the LSA will retain full oversight over the selection of journal content and the intellectual direction of the journals, continue to manage the rigorous peer review and editorial processes, and appoint the editors and boards.

As part of the move to Cambridge, Language will become fully open access, with all content accepted for publication from Volume 102 to be published with a Creative Commons license. The costs of open access publication will be covered through agreements between the publisher and the author’s institution, payment of APCs for those with third-party funding, or else waived entirely, ensuring every author can publish and enjoy the benefits of OA.

Cambridge University Press Publishing Director, Daniel Pearce, said “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with the Linguistic Society of America to publish Language and its sister titles. We share with the LSA a commitment to contribute to the dissemination of research at the highest levels of excellence through an open access model that is both sustainable and equitable. We look forward to working with the LSA and its editorial teams to ensure the future success of the program and to assist the Society in achieving its broader objectives at a time of rapid and lasting change.”

LSA President Heidi Harley stated that “Cambridge University Press has a tremendous record of linguistics publication, making partnership with the LSA a natural fit. We are especially excited that through this collaboration we are able to bring our flagship journal, Language, into the open access era, making our linguistics research globally accessible and enabling linguists around the world to reach across borders and barriers to advance our common scientific goals for the greater good.”

LSA Executive Director Margaret Weigers Vitullo commented, “this new partnership with Cambridge represents a major step forward for LSA, and will bring much of our publications portfolio onto a single site, providing easier discovery, as well as smoother and more streamlined submission and review processes. It will also give LSA new tools with which to move forward as a scholarly society serving members and the linguistics community.”

Keep an eye out for more information about the partnership in the coming months.
