We provide certain unusual generalizations of Clausen's and Orr's theorems for solutions of fourth-order and fifth-order generalized hypergeometric equations. As an application, we present several examples of algebraic transformations of Calabi–Yau differential equations.

Poincaré's Polyhedron Theorem is a widely known valuable tool in constructing manifolds endowed with a prescribed geometric structure. It is one of the few criteria providing discreteness of groups of isometries. This work contains a version of Poincaré's Polyhedron Theorem that is applicable to constructing fibre bundles over surfaces and also suits geometries of non-constant curvature. Most conditions of the theorem, being as local as possible, are easy to verify in practice.

Two subgroups A and B of a group G are said to be totally completely conditionally permutable (tcc-permutable) in G if X permutes with Yg for some g ∊ 〈X, Y〉, for all X ≤ A and Y ≤ B. We study the belonging of a finite product of tcc-permutable subgroups to a saturated formation of soluble groups containing all finite supersoluble groups.

Homological properties of several Banach left L1(G)-modules have been studied by Dales and Polyakov and recently by Ramsden. In this paper, we characterize some homological properties of and as Banach left L1(G)-modules, such as flatness, injectivity and projectivity.

We define an infinite class of fractals, called horizontally and vertically blocked labyrinth fractals, which are dendrites and special Sierpiński carpets. Between any two points in the fractal there is a unique arc α; the length of α is infinite and the set of points where no tangent to α exists is dense in α.

We study classes of higher-order singular boundary-value problems on a time scale with a positive parameter λ in the differential equations. A homeomorphism and homomorphism ø are involved both in the differential equation and in the boundary conditions. Criteria are obtained for the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions. The dependence of positive solutions on the parameter λ is studied. Applications of our results to special problems are also discussed. Our analysis mainly relies on the mixed monotone operator theory. The results here are new, even in the cases of second-order differential and difference equations.

Here it is possible that F(0) = −∞ and that F(s) defined on (0,+∞) is not monotonously nondecreasing. Our results cover some known ones as a special case.

We use induction and interpolation techniques to prove that a composition operator induced by a map ϕ is bounded on the weighted Bergman space of the right half-plane if and only if ϕ fixes the point at ∞ non-tangentially and if it has a finite angular derivative λ there. We further prove that in this case the norm, the essential norm and the spectral radius of the operator are all equal and are given by λ(2+α)/2.

We consider large-time behaviour of global solutions of the Cauchy problem for a parabolic equation with a supercritical nonlinearity. It is known that the solution is global and unbounded if the initial value is bounded by a singular steady state and decays slowly. In this paper we show that the grow-up of solutions can be arbitrarily slow if the initial value is chosen appropriately.

We discuss the problem of the regularity-in-time of the map t ↦ Tt ∊ Lp(ℝd, ℝd; σ), where Tt is a transport map (optimal or not) from a reference measure σ to a measure μt which lies along an absolutely continuous curve t ↦ μt in the space (). We prove that in most cases such a map is no more than 1/p-Hölder continuous.

Continuing earlier studies over the real numbers, we study the expressible set of a sequence A = (an)n≥1 of p-adic numbers, which we define to be the set EpA = {∑n≥1ancn: cn ∈ ℕ}. We show that in certain circumstances we can calculate the Haar measure of EpA exactly. It turns out that our results extend to sequences of matrices with p-adic entries, so this is the setting in which we work.

Let G be a finite group, let p be a prime divisor of the order of G and let k(G) be the number of conjugacy classes of G. By disregarding at most finitely many non-solvable p-solvable groups G, we have with equality if and only if if is an integer, and CG(Cp) = Cp. This extends earlier work of Héthelyi, Külshammer, Malle and Keller.

If we let a = 1 and b = 0, then gk,a,b becomes the arithmetic function that was previously introduced by Farhi. Farhi proved that gk,1,0 is periodic and that k! is a period. Hong and Yang improved Farhi's period k! to lcm(1, 2, … , k) and conjectured that (lcm(1, 2, … , k, k + 1))/(k + 1) divides the smallest period of gk,1,0. Recently, Farhi and Kane proved this conjecture and determined the smallest period of gk,1,0. For the general integers a ≥ 1 and b ≥ 0, it is natural to ask the following interesting question: is gk,a,b periodic? If so, what is the smallest period of gk,a,b? We first show that the arithmetic function gk,a,b is periodic. Subsequently, we provide detailed p-adic analysis of the periodic function gk,a,b. Finally, we determine the smallest period of gk,a,b. Our result extends the Farhi–Kane Theorem from the set of positive integers to general arithmetic progressions.

We discuss some basic properties of the graded centre of a triangulated category and compute examples arising in representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras.

We investigate the functors from modules to modules that occur as the summands of tensor powers and the functors from modules to Hopf algebras that occur as natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. The main results provide some explicit natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. As a consequence, we obtain some decompositions of Lie powers over the general linear groups.

We study the boundedness and compactness of Toeplitz operators Ta on Bergman spaces , 1 < p < ∞. The novelty is that we allow distributional symbols. It turns out that the belonging of the symbol to a weighted Sobolev space of negative order is sufficient for the boundedness of Ta. We show the natural relation of the hyperbolic geometry of the disc and the order of the distribution. A corresponding sufficient condition for the compactness is also derived.

Palmer has shown that those hermitians in the weak-star operator closure of a commutative C*-algebra represented on a dual Banach space X that are known to commute with the initial C*-algebra form the real part of a weakly closed C*-algebra on X. Relying on a result of Murphy, it is shown in this paper that this last proviso may be dropped, and that the weak-star closure is even a W*-algebra.

When the dual Banach space X is separable, one can prove a similar result for C*-equivalent algebras, via a ‘separable patch’ completion theorem for Boolean algebras of projections on such spaces.

Let M be a maximal subalgebra of the Lie algebra L. A subalgebra C of L is said to be a completion for M if C is not contained in M but every proper subalgebra of C that is an ideal of L is contained in M. The set I(M) of all completions of M is called the index complex of M in L. We use this concept to investigate the influence of the maximal subalgebras on the structure of a Lie algebra, in particular, finding new characterizations of solvable and supersolvable Lie algebras.
