Taking a Deep-Dive into Weedy Rice
Rice is mainstay of the human diet and is grown in almost every region of the world. Its main competitor is “weedy rice,” a weed similar in size, shape and structure to the crop it infests. Weedy rice can rob vital nutrients from rice crops and cause yield losses of up to 90% – creating a real threat to food security.
A special edition of the journal Weed Science takes a close look at this unwelcome invader and what can be done to reduce its impact. Nearly a dozen articles from scientists around the globe are included. Examples of the topics include:
- An update on weedy rice in Arkansas
- Rice production practices and perceptions of weedy red rice in Taiwan
- Weedy rice infestations, diversity and management practices in Brazil
- Weedy rice management practices and adoption of Clearfield™ rice crops in Malaysia
- Learnings from 18 years of Clearfield™ rice adoption in Brazil
- Relationship between weedy rice infestation levels and agronomic practices in Italy
- The impact of various control strategies on the weedy rice seedbank
- Evolution of herbicide-resistant weedy rice in Malaysia
- Perspectives on biological weed control in transplanted rice
