Let R be the ring of linear transformations of a right vector space over a division ring D. Three results are proved: (1) if |D|>4, then for any a∈R there exists a unit u of R such that a+u,a−u and a−u−1 are units of R; (2) if |D|>3 , then for any a∈R there exists a unit u of R such that both a+u and a−u−1 are units of R; (3) if |D|>2 , then for any a∈R there exists a unit u of R such that both a−u and a−u−1 are units of R. The second result extends the main result in H. Chen, [‘Decompositions of countable linear transformations’, Glasg. Math. J. (2010), doi:10.1017/S0017089510000121] and the third gives an affirmative answer to the question raised in the same paper.

In this paper we investigate the analogue of the classical badly approximable setup in which the distance to the nearest integer ‖⋅‖ is replaced by the sup norm |⋅|. In the case of one linear form we prove that the hybrid badly approximable set is of full Hausdorff dimension.

The expansion constant of a simple graph G of order n is defined as where denotes the set of edges in G between the vertex subset S and its complement . An expander family is a sequence {Gi} of d-regular graphs of increasing order such that h(Gi)>ϵ for some fixed ϵ>0. Existence of such families is known in the literature, but explicit construction is nontrivial. A folklore theorem states that there is no expander family of circulant graphs only. In this note, we provide an elementary proof of this fact by first estimating the second largest eigenvalue of a circulant graph, and then employing Cheeger’s inequalities where G is a d-regular graph and λ2(G) denotes the second largest eigenvalue of G. Moreover, the associated equality cases are discussed.

Some bounds in terms of Gâteaux lateral derivatives for the weighted f-Gini mean difference generated by convex and symmetric functions in linear spaces are established. Applications for norms and semi-inner products are also provided.

In Gun and Ramakrishnan [‘On special values of certain Dirichlet L-functions’, Ramanujan J.15 (2008), 275–280], we gave expressions for the special values of certain Dirichlet L-function in terms of finite sums involving Jacobi symbols. In this note we extend our earlier results by giving similar expressions for two more special values of Dirichlet L-functions, namely L(−1,χm) and L(−2,χ−m′), where m,m′ are square-free integers with m≡1 mod 8 and m′≡3 mod 8 and χD is the Kronecker symbol . As a consequence, using the identities of Cohen [‘Sums involving the values at negative integers of L-functions of quadratic characters’, Math. Ann.217 (1975), 271–285], we also express the finite sums with Jacobi symbols in terms of sums involving divisor functions. Finally, we observe that the proof of Theorem 1.2 in Gun and Ramakrishnan (as above) is a direct consequence of Equation (24) in Gun, Manickam and Ramakrishnan [‘A canonical subspace of modular forms of half-integral weight’, Math. Ann.347 (2010), 899–916].

In this paper, we classify the finite groups belonging to the class of cyclic-transitive groups. A group G is said to be cyclic-transitive if the following condition holds: if x, y, z are nonidentity elements of G such that 〈x,y〉 and 〈y,z〉 are both cyclic, then 〈x,z〉 is also cyclic.

It is well known that if a convex hyperbolic polygon is constructed as a fundamental domain for a subgroup of SL(2,ℝ), then its translates by the group form a locally finite tessellation and its side-pairing transformations form a system of generators for the group. Such a hyperbolically convex fundamental domain for any discrete subgroup can be obtained by using Dirichlet’s and Ford’s polygon constructions. However, these two results are not well adapted for the actual construction of a hyperbolically convex fundamental domain due to their nature of construction. A third, and most important and practical, method of obtaining a fundamental domain is through the use of a right coset decomposition as described below. If Γ2 is a subgroup of Γ1 such that Γ1=Γ2⋅{L1,L2,…,Lm} and 𝔽 is the closure of a fundamental domain of the bigger group Γ1, then the set is a fundamental domain of Γ2. One can ask at this juncture, is it possible to choose the right coset suitably so that the set ℛ is a convex hyperbolic polygon? We will answer this question affirmatively for Hecke modular groups.

The quasilinearity of certain composite functionals defined on convex cones in linear spaces is investigated. Applications in refining the Jensen, Hölder, Minkowski and Schwarz inequalities are given.

The Euclidean group E(3) is the noncompact, semidirect product group E(3)≅ℝ3⋊SO(3). It is the Lie group of orientation-preserving isometries of three-dimensional Euclidean space. The Euclidean algebra 𝔢(3) is the complexification of the Lie algebra of E(3). We embed the Euclidean algebra 𝔢(3) into the simple Lie algebra and show that the irreducible representations V (m,0,0) and V (0,0,m) of are 𝔢(3)-indecomposable, thus creating a new class of indecomposable 𝔢(3) -modules. We then show that V (0,m,0) may decompose.

The partition monoid is a salient natural example of a *-regular semigroup. We find a Galois connection between elements of the partition monoid and binary relations, and use it to show that the partition monoid contains copies of the semigroup of transformations and the symmetric and dual-symmetric inverse semigroups on the underlying set. We characterize the divisibility preorders and the natural order on the (straight) partition monoid, using certain graphical structures associated with each element. This gives a simpler characterization of Green’s relations. We also derive a new interpretation of the natural order on the transformation semigroup. The results are also used to describe the ideal lattices of the straight and twisted partition monoids and the Brauer monoid.

We show that for n≥2, n-weak amenability of the second dual 𝒜** of a Banach algebra 𝒜 implies that of 𝒜. We also provide a positive answer for the case n=1, which sharpens some older results. Our method of proof also provides a unified approach to give short proofs for some known results in the case where n=1.

Let Y be a fixed nonempty subset of a set X and let T(X,Y ) denote the semigroup of all total transformations from X into Y. In 1975, Symons described the automorphisms of T(X,Y ). Three decades later, Nenthein, Youngkhong and Kemprasit determined its regular elements, and more recently Sanwong, Singha and Sullivan characterized all maximal and minimal congruences on T(X,Y ). In 2008, Sanwong and Sommanee determined the largest regular subsemigroup of T(X,Y ) when |Y |≠1 and Y ≠ X; and using this, they described the Green’s relations on T(X,Y ) . Here, we use their work to describe the ideal structure of T(X,Y ) . We also correct the proof of the corresponding result for a linear analogue of T(X,Y ) .

A Banach space is an Asplund space if every continuous gauge has a point where the subdifferential mapping is Hausdorff weak upper semi-continuous with weakly compact image. This contributes towards the solution of a problem posed by Godefroy, Montesinos and Zizler.

Given a prime p, the Fermat quotient qp(u) of u with gcd (u,p)=1 is defined by the conditions We derive a new bound on multiplicative character sums with Fermat quotients qp(ℓ) at prime arguments ℓ.

We prove that the modified Benjamin–Ono–Burgers equation is globally well-posed in Hs for s>0. Moreover, we show that the solution of the modified Benjamin–Ono–Burgers equation converges to that of the modified Benjamin–Ono equation in the natural space C([0,T];Hs), s≥1/2, as the dissipative coefficient ϵ goes to zero, provided that the L2 norm of the initial data is sufficiently small.

In this paper we investigate principal prime ideals in commutative rings. Among other things we characterize the principal prime ideals that are both minimal and maximal and characterize the maximal ideals of a polynomial ring that are principal. Our main result is that if (p) is a principal prime ideal of an atomic ring R, then ht(p)≤1.

For any generalized ordered space X with the underlying linearly ordered topological space Xu, let X* be the minimal closed linearly ordered extension of X and be the minimal dense linearly ordered extension of X. The following results are obtained.

1. (1) The projection mapping π:X*→X, π(〈x,i〉)=x, is closed.

2. (2) The projection mapping , ϕ(〈x,i〉)=x, is closed.

3. (3) X* is a monotone D-space if and only if X is a monotone D-space.

4. (4) is a monotone D-space if and only if Xu is a monotone D-space.

5. (5) For the Michael line M, is a paracompact p-space, but not continuously Urysohn.

Let X be a topological space. A family ℬ of nonempty open sets in X is called a π-base of X if for each open set U in X there exists B∈ℬ such that B⊂U. The order of a π-base ℬ at a point x is the cardinality of the family ℬx ={B∈ℬ:x∈B} and the order of the π-base ℬ is the supremum of the orders of ℬ at each point x∈X. A classical theorem of Shapirovskiĭ [‘Special types of embeddings in Tychonoff cubes’, in: Subspaces of Σ-Products and Cardinal Invariants, Topology, Coll. Math. Soc. J. Bolyai, 23 (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1980), pp. 1055–1086; ‘Cardinal invariants in compact Hausdorff spaces’, Amer. Math. Soc. Transl.134 (1987), 93–118] establishes that the minimum order of a π-base is bounded by the tightness of the space when the space is compact. Since then, there have been many attempts at improving the result. Finally, in [‘The projective π-character bounds the order of a π-base’, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.136 (2008), 2979–2984], Juhász and Szentmiklóssy proved that the minimum order of a π-base is bounded by the ‘projective π-character’ of the space for any topological space (not only for compact spaces), improving Shapirovskiĭ’s theorem. The projective π-character is in some sense an ‘external’ cardinal function. Our purpose in this paper is, on the one hand, to give bounds of the projective π-character using ‘internal’ topological properties of the subspaces on compact spaces. On the other hand, we give a bound on the minimum order of a π-base using other cardinal functions in the frame of general topological spaces. Open questions are posed.

Erdős and Szekeres [‘Some number theoretic problems on binomial coefficients’, Aust. Math. Soc. Gaz.5 (1978), 97–99] showed that for any four positive integers satisfying m1+m2=n1+n2, the two binomial coefficients (m1+m2)!/m1!m2! and (n1+n2)!/n1!n2! have a common divisor greater than 1. The analogous statement for k-element families of k-nomial coefficients (k>1) was conjectured in 1997 by David Wasserman.

Erdős and Szekeres remark that if m1,m2,n1,n2 as above are all greater than 1, there is probably a lower bound on the common divisor in question which goes to infinity as a function of m1 +m2 . Such a bound is obtained in Section 2.

The remainder of this paper is devoted to proving results that narrow the class of possible counterexamples to Wasserman’s conjecture.

The topologies of the density type in Euclidean space of dimension higher than one are introduced. Definitions are based on a notion of density point connected with a set of sequences of real numbers. Our purpose is to study properties of these topologies and connections between them.
