Cover Artwork: Head in 4 Parts
In the May 2023 edition of Muses – the arts blog from BJPsych International – Dr Tim McInerny, Pictures Editor, BJPsych International, introduces Peter Grundy, the artist whose work is on the cover of the latest edition of BJPsych International.
As pictures editor, I selected Peter Grundy’s art for the May cover because of his striking designs that simply portray complicated issues.
Peter Grundy is one of the world’s leading information designers.
Peter Grundy states his designs and illustrations aim to turn complex information into simple visual stories in a world of modern messiness.
At the London Royal College of Art in the late 70s, Peter Grundy and Tilly Northedge became interested in a visual communication that explained rather than sold things. In 1980 they started a studio making information design in a new and creative way, which they called Grundy & Northedge. Over the next 26 years they created a unique visual language with wit and humour at its heart and redefined the once dull area of information design.
In 2006 Peter Grundy started Grundini, venturing beyond information design and into brand and advertising. Anywhere in fact where the complex and perplex needed explaining by simple, elegant, visual messages and ideas.
Peter says ‘My work is more about ideas than image. That is not to say the image is not important, but it is to say I spend more time on the idea than the illustration itself. I have invented (over the years) a very simple way of drawing that gets the idea across with as little fuss as possible. I often use the analogy of an iceberg, the tip (the part you see) is the illustration, but the bigger bit below water (the bit you don’t see) that’s the idea.’
Peter is proud to have his work on the cover of BJPsych International and the Cover, Head in 4 Parts, was designed for the Journal.
