Cover Artwork: “An aspect of Ikebana” by Ikuyo Munakata-Morrison
The August edition of Muses – the arts blog from BJPsych International – Dr Tim McInerny, Pictures Editor, BJPsych International introduces Ikuyo Munakata-Morrison, the artist whose work is on the cover of the August edition of BJPsych International.
As pictures editor, I selected Ikuyo Munakata-Morrison’s stunning ikebana piece for the August cover, because of the strength and beauty of its form. Floral nature sculptured by Ikuyo’s mastery in to a nerve like structure.

“An aspect of Ikebana”
Ikuyo Munakata-Morrison
Ikebana, a floral art tradition dating back to the 7th century in Japan, literally translates as “making flowers alive” in Japanese.
With 25 years of teaching experience, Ikuyo has played a vital role in promoting Ikebana in the U.K. In 2007, she founded and became the Founding Director of the Sogetsu London Branch, currently serving as the Honorary Advisor. She holds the “Riji” highest teaching grade.
With a history over a century, Sogetsu-style Ikebana distinguishes itself for the free expression of individuality and originality. Its philosophy describes Ikebana as an expression of one’s thoughts and feelings through plant materials.
“I composed this piece using Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ (corkscrew hazel/contorted hazel) inspired by its unique beauty. It comprises natural bends and doesn’t use any nails or wire. At times, I feel like capturing beauty by using robust and wild materials that transcend the conventional elegance associated with flowers.”
