Cover Artwork: Faces

In the August 2023 edition of Muses – the arts blog from BJPsych International – Dr Tim McInerny, Pictures Editor, BJPsych International introduces Eddie, the artist whose work is on the cover of the latest edition of BJPsych International.

As Pictures Editor, I selected Eddie’s art for the August cover because of his intriguing drawings of faces and his enthusiastic use of any surface, here water cups. The rows of faces appear like an audience, looking out on us the viewer and reader of this journal.

Eddie

Eddie draws on anything at his disposal in his hospital environment, making drawings on a daily basis.

The drawings are of people around him and those he thinks about whilst listening to music on his headphones. The faces often belong to the same individual who he attempts to capture differently each time he paints them. He loves music and brings song titles into his artwork, often referencing tracks or adding musical notation to his drawings.

Eddie frequently uses bright posca pens on paper cups or other paper objects. The cups are often filled with flowers and left out as presents for staff and patients at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, London.

At the time of writing, Eddie’s work is included in an exhibition at Bethlem Gallery titled Elsewhere, which explores artists’ responses to the notion of the ownership of and belonging in different spaces.

Eddie’s works on paper cups play various roles: in gifting these, the artist engenders reciprocity and generosity. The cup art works also transform the environment, placed almost incidentally around the hospital site.
