Between the early sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries, a simple inheritance dispute arose over the O’Driscoll lordship of Collymore in west Cork, in the area south of the Ilen river and incorporating the village of Baltimore/Dún na Séad and the islands of Sherkin and Cape Clear.

There can be little doubt that the Anglo-Norman (or English) invasion of the twelfth century was one of the most important events of Irish history. By the time it took place it had been considered for some years by the English king, Henry II, and some modern commentators have been disposed to regard it as an inevitability.
I wrote this article to take this past more seriously on its own terms, and to understand how the political, religious, and economic context of Ireland and its diaspora shaped a culture that, for historians of sexuality, will be familiar yet distinctive.

The discovery of radium in 1898 spurred a range of public, industrial and scientific reactions. The public were enthralled by this near mystical element. Its ability to produce its own energy soon gave rise to a ‘radium craze’ in which promises of its health-giving properties were prominent. A range of supposed radium-based products, such as creams and fortified water, were quickly on sale.

It is a moving piece about how visual arts intersects with trauma and healing. I can recall the afternoon that changed how I create. I was 12 years old and in my last year of primary school and the looming high school years ahead presented many questions about how I wanted to proceed with my art. I had painted a watercolour still life and I was bored with it. Although my art received praise from my family and peers, my handling of watercolour was juvenile at best. I needed more; technically and conceptually. It was then that I began to question the art making process. Like most young artists in primary school we were simply taught that “good art is pretty art.”

Two parasite groups were evaluated; helminths and protozoans, and four mental illness classifications; depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, schizotypal disorders and unspecified mental illnesses.
