ASLME Journals Transition Notice

Cambridge University Press to publish The Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics and the American Journal of Law & Medicine on behalf of the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics

Cambridge University Press and the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics (ASLME) are pleased to announce that beginning in January 2021 Cambridge University Press will publish the ASLME’s respected multidisciplinary journals: The Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics and the American Journal of Law & Medicine.  The Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics (JLME) is North America’s leading peer-reviewed journal for multidisciplinary research at the intersection of law, health policy, ethics, and medicine. Publishing for nearly 50 years, it publishes topical symposia alongside research articles and columns and is an authoritative source for health law teachers, practitioners, policy makers, risk managers, and anyone else concerned with the safe, equitable, and ethical delivery of health care services.

The American Journal of Law & Medicine (AJLM) has published in partnership with Boston University School of Law since 1975 and focuses on the analysis of issues at the nexus of law and medicine. Peer-reviewed articles publish alongside valuable case notes and comments.

Cambridge University Press Director of Publishing Ella Colvin said, “We are delighted to be partnering with this prestigious society to expand Cambridge’s publishing program in law, medicine and ethics at a time when global circumstances have led to scholarship at the juncture of these areas expanding rapidly and becoming even more relevant. Together we are proud to offer authors two of the highest quality venues for their important and timely work.”

Executive Director of ASLME Ted Hutchinson said “We are so pleased to be joining the family of Cambridge University Press. Their outstanding publishing program has interested and attracted scholars in our disciplines for decades, so it fit perfectly to bring JLME and AJLM into this group. World-class journals need a world-class home to publish, disseminate, and share the important work being done, and we felt CUP was the best way to serve our members, readers, and authors. We are thrilled with the partnership.”

Its mission is to provide high-quality scholarship, debate, and critical thought for professionals at the intersection of law, medicine, and ethics. Its members come together to examine big health questions with far-reaching social ramifications like genetic testing and research, medical record privacy, end-of-life decisions, and the dynamics of informed consent. The society’s greatest strength is its multidisciplinary focus. This creates a dynamic forum to exchange ideas from a wide range of perspectives, to:

  • Promote patient safety and quality of care
  • Facilitate dialogue on emerging biomedical science and research

As well as publishing two acclaimed peer-reviewed journals, ASLME sponsors conferences and webinars, many of which offer continuing education credits, on the key issues of the day. ASLME also connects teaching professionals across North America for the exchange of ideas, classroom materials, and curricula.
