Thematic Collection on Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science in Design

Guest Editors: Ji Han (University of Exeter, UK), Peter Childs (Imperial College London, UK), Jianxi Luo (SUTD, Singapore)

Great progress has been made to date in applying neurophysiological and biometric measures, such as eye-tracking (ET), electroencephalogram (EEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and heart rate variability (HRV), in the design domain to study human design cognition. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled the discovery of patterns in large and complex datasets, such as brain signals and eye-tracking data, for addressing a wide range of applications. Bringing together AI and cognitive science have thereby offered methods and approaches to study design from new perspectives. This provides researchers with the opportunity to better utilise the cognitive data acquired, help unlock the inner workings of the designer’s brain, and drive design research forward.

This Thematic Collection aims to attract research studies on the advances in applying AI techniques and cognitive science for the analysis and exploration of design. Innovative contributions in conceptual, theoretical and empirical aspects are all welcome. Topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cognitive analysis for design
  • Computer-aided design
  • Design creativity
  • Design evaluation
  • Design methods and tools
  • Emotional Design
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Neurocognition in design
  • Neurophysiological and biometric measures in design
  • Neuroscience for design
  • Personalised design
  • Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality for design

Schedule:

Instruction for Submissions:

Information about the format and style required for AI EDAM papers, as well as about submission, can be found at: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/ai-edam/information/instructions-contributors. Note that all queries about submissions for thematic collections should be addressed to the Guest Editors, and not to the Editor in Chief.

Please submit your paper through the ScholarOne system online at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aie. You need to create a user account first if you are a new user. During your submission process, note that you will need to answer the question: "Are you submitting to a Thematic Collection?", and you will need to choose "Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science in Design" from the drop-down list.
