Depuis longtemps, les archéologues se sont efforcés d'éclairer les conditions qui expliquent l'émergence des premières civilisations dans les régions-clefs du Proche, du Moyen et de l'Extrême Orient, de la Mésoamérique et des Andes centrales. Pour la plupart d'entre eux, la compréhension de ce processus d'émergence paraissait dépendre de la connaissance des étapes initiales du développement de l'agriculture et des débuts concomitants d'un mode de vie sédentarisé en villages. Aussi leurs efforts avaient-ils porté principalement sur la mise à jour, dans ces zones nucléaires, de longues et fécondes séquences archéologiques.
