Observations of acoustic images made along a transect perpendicular to the Coast, off Villefranche-sur-Mer, allow one to recognize the hydrological zone corresponding to a surface density gradient characterizing the Ligurian Sea front (Mediterranean Sea). Combinations of statistical and geometrical parameters from the digitized echoes enable discrimination between different classes of patches in relation to the frontal structure during one transect recorded on December 20, 1990. Patch recognition is based on the extraction of the general trend of each column and each row of the digitized data matrix by Eigenvector filtering. Multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and discriminant analysis) run on a 650 patches × 19 variables matrix shows a high negative relation between statistic and geometric parameters of the patches. The two main discriminant parameters are shape and echo strength of patches. From the convergence of our results in the Ligurian front with those of previous works made in other frontal region, it is suggested that this method could be generalized for quantifying and standardizing studies of the patchiness of plankton.

Daytime 38 kHz mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS) of small pelagic fish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence was recorded at 60-m intervals along a regular network of 11 parallel transects in August 1991. Profiles of temperature, salinity, density and transmittance were collected on a grid of 44 punctual stations along the transects. The MVBS was contagiously distributed and autocorrelated for al1 transects. No significant monotone relationship with any of the environmental variables was evidenced, except that the highest concentrations of fish were located over shallow bottoms. The anisotropic variogram of MVBS indicated three different scales of spatial structures: an unresolved small-scale variability, which accounted for only 7.7% of variance, and two structure components of along-transect scales of ~500 m (~40%) and 15 km (~50%). The theoretical variograms deduced for larger echo-integration units (EIUs) than the recorded 60-m unit, provided a good fit to the corresponding experimental variograms up to EIU of 1920-m, when the disturbing effect of outliers on the variograms was removed. Global estimates and maps produced with 240-m and 1920-m EIU data were almost identical, showing that no significant loss of information was caused by increasing the EIU. Asymmetric confidence intervals of the global estimates are obtained using two variograms, one controlled for the effect of the outliers, the other one not controlled. In an effort to take the relation of MVBS with the bottom depth into account, four different kriging methods were compared: ordinary kriging, kriging with the bottom depth or its indicator-transform as external drift, and 3-D ordinary kriging with depth as the third dimension. Because of the weak relation of MVBS with the bottom depth, ordinary kriging had the best performance. Results are discussed in the context of applications of geostatistics to estimation and mapping of acoustic survey data.

Schooling fish may aggregate in very high densities covering very small areas. Thus the probability of hitting such high-density spots during a large-scale sampling is very low. The sampling fluctuations of the tail of the histogram are thought to be very significant. The stock biomass estimate and its precision rely greatly on how precisely the tail of the histogram can be sampled. In order to acquire elements for improving survey designs and abundance estimators wc study here the relation in space that the high values have with the other values. A disjunctive kriging approach is used. Different quantiles of the histogram are coded by indicators. The spatial structure of each indicator and its spatial covariation with the others are studied by computing experimental indicator variograms and cross-variograms. Such analysis is applied to dissect finely the spatial structure of a Norwegian herring stock sampled acoustically. It is shown that when going from low-density areas to high-density ones, intermediate values are not necessarily crossed. Thus a particular disjunctive kriging model with no transition in space is well adapted to the herring data. The model is based on the regressions of each indicator on the one immediately below it. In the model one can estimate the probability for the fish density to trespass a given cut-off at a given location when knowing that the density trespasses lower cut-offs at surrounding points. It is shown on the data that the high densities are structured and show small aggregations. Then it is shown that having trespassed a certain cut-off, i.e. inside the corresponding areas in space, the high-density aggregations can be considered to be positioned independently from the other values. These areas, where the structuring of the high values is not correlated to the structuring of the other values, are mapped using the fitted disjunctive kriging model. The implications for survey designing of the existence of such areas and of their geometry are discussed. Also discussed is the possibility of stratifying the data in spatially uncorrelated boxes when deriving the biomass estimate and its precision, on the basis of an observed spatial non-correlation property between the spatial distribution of different quantiles.

The gulf of Cariaco, Venezuela, is a rather isolated piece of coastal ocean where spatio-temporal variability has been measured. In 1986, three repeated surveys have been carried out in this gulf. The important differences in biomass estimates are attributed to sampling error only. The biological nature of this variability is studied. It is due to a high concentration of the biomass in a few schools and correlatively to the hit or the miss of these large schools, during the sampling. Structural information for predicting them is sought. Also, the number of schools per elementary sampling distance unit (ESDU) and the biomass in each school were measured by echointegration. It is found that there is no clear relation between these two variables. Thus their spatial structures are studied separately, using geostatistics. The number of schools per ESDU is structured in space. Its histogram is not very dissymmetrical. The error variance of its mean estimate is reasonable. The biomass per school is not structured in space. Its histogram is highly skewed. The error variance of its mean estimate is high. The major error variance term on the abundance is due to the imprecision on the estimate of the mean biomass per school. The major quantitative problem is the indeterminancy at the sampling stage of the maximum biomass per school and correlatively the major problem is the characterization of the skewness of the biomass per school histogram. The possibility of using the number of schools as an index of biomass is discussed.

The diurnal cycle in density measured during acoustic surveys is difficult to investigate quantitatively from the data set of a single survey because the signal depends mainly on the spatial variability and/or horizontal fish migrations. In order to detect the diurnal cycle in spite of the noise due to spatial variability, several acoustic surveys from different tropical countries were combined, after standardization, into a single data base. A diurnal cycle is observed, with the highest values during the night and the lowest during the day. The transition periods are very short (less than one hour). Different hypotheses relative to fish behaviour or to acoustic biases are discussed. Among these hypotheses the lateral avoidance of schools by day and the diurnal change in patchiness seem predominant. Moreover, owing to the extreme skewness of the density distribution the applicability of the Central Limit Theorem is discussed.

A method for acoustic abundance estimation by horizontal guided sonar of fish schooling close to surface is presented. The basic principle is to measure the horizontal area of schools in situ, and derive the school biomass subsequently through a school area to school biomass relationship. The application of the method is exemplified through a sonar survey in the eastern North Sea-Skagerrak in September 1990. The areas of recorded schools were measured by the estimate function of a Furuno CSH-70 sonar, and selected schools were captured by purse seine to establish a school-area to school-biomass relationship. In the actual region, the biomass of herrig (Clupea harengus) and mackerel (Scomber scombrus) was estimated to about 90 000 and 43 0000 tons, respectively. The accuracy of the method is discussed and improvements are suggested.

One of the main limitations in acoustic stock assessment is fish identification. We propose here a new method for identifying several communities of tropical fish within a surveyed area. This method, called "Acoustic Populations", consists in splitting a study area in systematic regular strata such as geographical rectangles, and calculating for each stratum a set of acoustic parameters that can be easily obtained with conventional acoustic equipment, and have a discriminant power, such as target strength, mean density, confidence interval and dispersion indexes. It is based on the fact that the biological (specific diversity, physiology) and ethological (gregarism, migrations, etc.) characteristics of fish communities have a particular influence on the echoes recorded, which become characteristical and thus are able to discriminate acoustically several populations. An example of application of the method is given for Eastern Venezuela, and the use of the results for mapping, evaluation and stratification of acoustic data is discussed.

Software, MOVIES-B, developed by IFREMER (Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer), enables the recognition of echogram features as acoustic detection structures according to spatial-energetic contiguity criteria. These structures (shoals, plankton layers) are described by energetic, morphological, spatial and temporal descriptors. Specifying acoustic detections as individual shoals will allow shoal by shoal echo-integration and may lead to better biomass estimation and shoal species description. The conceptual and operational framework of MOVIES-B is presented in the first part of this paper. The second part presents preliminary work performed in order to assess the feasibility of classification and possible species identification of shoals using MOVIES-B software. This research has studied the data set obtained from four fisheries acoustic surveys, in the Bay of Biscay. The data set is a matrix of 29 descriptors from 13,122 shoals. A limited knowledge of species composition was obtained from trawling. Eight species were captured: Sardina pilchardus, Clupea harengus, Sprattus sprattus, Engraulis encrasicolus, Micromesistius poutassou, Trachurus sp., Scomber sp. and Capros aper. Cluster analysis and linear discriminant analysis were performed on trawled identified shoals data (808 shoals), after a reduction of the space descriptors by a stepwise technique. A partition into 6 clusters was carried out and clusters are described by species composition and continuous variables values. After grouping the six species shoals in two groups, 84% of shoals from the testing data set could be correctly classified using the linear discriminant function.

Echo sounder data were used to investigate the spatio-temporal variability of shoal behaviour in the Bay of Biscay. Data collected from annual surveys were processed using MOVIES-B software in order to mcasure this variability. The software was designed to measure morphological, energetic and space-time distribution descriptors from the acoustic signal received from fish shoals. Two surveys, DAAG 90 and DAAG 91, provided the appropriate characteristics for such an analysis. The survey's objective was to obtain relative abundance indices for the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) biomass in the Bay of Biscay. The surveys were carried out in the same area (southern Bay of Biscay), at the same period (April) within one year interval (1990 and 1991), using the same equipment (vessel, acoustic system, fishing gear) in a multispecies environment. Frequency distributions for every descriptor were obtained and used to describe the acoustic detection of fish shoals. The analysis of frequency distributions of space-time descriptors (year, day-hour and bottom depth) allowed the construction of derived discrete variables, which defined new subsets of detections. The subsets were then described by the continuous variables. A principal components analysis was used to describe the multidimensional data structure and to describe behaviour patterns. The size and external outline unevenness are correlated groups of shoal descriptors, but are independent of the water column shoal position and the degree of internal shoal structure. An important feature is shoal size variability between years. Significant differences in shoal characteristics were found between bathymetric zones of the same region and the pattern was similar between years. This spatial wariability is related to the distribution of different species between bathymetric zones. Although it was not possible to explain size variability between years, this will be necessary to improve shoal characterization. More knowledge about oceanographic conditions, the productivity level and availability of food, predator pressure and accurate identification of shoal speeies is required, in order to study the spatial or temporal variability in size and behaviour of shoals.
