Review of the Nearctic species of the Holarctic subgenus Argutor (Coleoptera: Carabidae)

Abstract

On the basis of colour of the legs and structural details of the pronotum and male genitalia, Pterostichus commutabilis (Motschulsky) auct. is shown to be composite, consisting of P. commutabilis and Pterostichus praetermissus (Chaudoir), the latter name therefore being removed from synonymy with the former name. Dot maps show that the geographical ranges of these two species overlap extensively in northeastern North America, but the range of P. commutabilis extends farther north and west (to eastern British Columbia and eastern California), whereas the range of P. praetermissus extends farther south (to northern Florida). A third species of the Holarctic subgenus Argutor Dejean living in North America is the Palaearctic Pterostichus vernalis (Panzer), whose Nearctic range is confined to southern Quebec and northermost Vermont. This taxonomic treatment includes a key distinguishing adults of these three species, and each species is characterized morphologically, geographically, and ecologically (in terms of habitat).

À partir de la coloration des pattes et de détails morphologiques du pronotum et des génitalia mâles, les auteurs montrent que le Pterostichus commutabilis (Motschulsky) auct. consiste en deux espèces, P. commutabilis and Pterostichus praetermissus (Chaudoir), ce dernier nom étant supprimé de la liste synonymique du premier. Des cartes montrant les localités de récolte indiquent que la répartition des deux espèces se chevauche substantiellement dans le nord-est de l'Amérique du Nord, mais que la répartition du P. commutabilis s'étend plus au nord et à l'ouest (jusque dans l'est de la Colombie Britannique et l'est de la Californie), alors que la répartition du P. praetermissus s'étend plus au sud (jusque dans le nord de la Floride). Une troisième espèce du sous-genre Argutor Dejean présente en Amérique du Nord est le Pterostichus vernalis (Panzer), introduit d'Europe et restreint au sud du Québec et à l'extrême nord du Vermont. Ce travail taxonomique inclut un tableau de détermination permettant de séparer les adultes de ces trois espèces et chacune est caractérisée au point de vue morphologique, géographique et écologique (en terme d'habitat).
