A SECOND SPECIES OF THE DRYWOOD TERMITE GENUS MARGINITERMES (ISOPTERA: KALOTERMITIDAE)

Abstract

A second species of the dry wood termite genus Marginitermes Krishna is described from Baja California del Sur, Mexico, and a redescription of the genus is provided. Soldier head capsules, mandibles, antennae, labra, postmenta, and pronota are illustrated for Marginitermes cactiphagus Myles sp.nov. and Marginitermes hubbardi (Banks). Both species occur in dead skeletons of columnar cacti and other wood species. Both species differ from related drywood termites in the structure of the proventricular armature, suggestive of unique adaptation for intestinal manipulation of cactus wood fibres. Marginitermes is shown to be related to a western continental subgroup of Incisitermes comprised of I. minor (Hagen), I. marginipennis (Latreille), and I. fruticavus Rust.

Résumé

Une deuxième espèce du genre Marginitermes Krishna a été trouvée dans le sud de la Basse-Californie, Mexique; on en trouvera ici la description ainsi qu’une description révisée du genre. La capsule céphalique, les mandibules, les antennes, le labre, le postmentum et le pronotum des soldats de Marginitermes cactiphagus Myles sp.nov. et de Marginitermes hubbardi (Banks) sont illustrés. Les deux espèces vivent dans les squelettes des cactus colonnaires avec d’autres espèces lignicoles; elles diffèrent des autres Kalotermitidae par la structure de leur armature proventriculaire qui semble représenter une adaptation exceptionnelle reliée à la manipulation intestinale des fibres du bois de cactus. Marginitermes est apparenté au sous-groupe des espèces continentales du genre Incisitermes dans l’ouest, soit I. minor (Hagen), I. marginipennis (Latreille) et I. fruticavus Rust.
