During the past summer I noticed that the wasp, Ancistrocerus capra (De Sauss) was frequently to be taken on the Locust Tree (Robinia pseudacacia), so one afternoon about the middle of August I thought I would try to discover what was the attraction. I did not have to wait long for a wasp and soon found one which appeared busy hunting. Many of the leaves on this particular tree had the edges folded over and swollen, the work of some gall maker; she examined these leaves very closely, but I hardly thought that what was in them would be of any use to a wasp the size of capra.

During the course of an investigation carried out some years ago by the writer in the Gaspe peninsula of Quebec, it was discovered that adults of Dendroctonus piceaperda Hopk., Polygraphus rufipennis Kby., Ips perturbatus Eichh., and Ips borealis Sw., cut two sets of tunnels the same season and in some cases hibernated and cut tunnels in the following season. Subsequently, a series of detailed studies on the biology of Canadian barkbeetles has been in progress in field laboratories at Fredericton, N. B., Frater, Ont., Vernon, B.C., and Pender Harbour, B. C.

The behavior of Polistes pallipes is extremely interesting when they are fed on larvae of the same species from other nests.

The wasps experimented with were made distinguishable from one another by little smears of paint on their bodies. Thereafter it was most convenient to make and keep Indian-like names for them based upon their distinguishing marks. The nests were fastened about the laboratory window frames, just above a porch roof.

It is during the month of August that one can find the wild bee, Perdita zebrata, nesting in the sandy soil at White Rocks near Boulder, Colorado. The nests are usually found together in groups of eight to ten, one female to a nest. Those studied last summer were located in a sandy field sloping to the south at the base of the cliffs.

It is well known that many of the crickets and katydids are not as uniform in their mass population as external morphological characters such as the systematist deals with would make them appear. The sequences of the seasons have made possible certain physiological segregations and expressions both in plants and animals. The winter annual among plants is well known, for it is the survival of a plant over the winter in the vegetative condition, usually in the immature rosette stage. As soon as the spring opens these chilled and sluggish plants start into growth and mature their seed in advance of seed sown in the springtime. The Annual Larkspur is a notable example of one of these. Not all plants normally produce winter annuals, for it is evident a plant must possess a high degree of cold resistance.

This paper is intended to bring up to date our knowledge of the Nsorth American species of Aradus, and it is supplementary to my Essay on this group published in 1921. (Trans. American Ent. Soc., XLVII: 1-106, pls. I-VII.) It is based largely on Canadian material sent to me by Dr. J. McDunnough, William J. Gerhard, and W. Downes. Although collectors have shown a considerable interest in the genus, very few new species have come to light; and so it seems likely that our knowledge in this direction is nearly complete. However, those who have access to collecting grounds which are comparatively unmarked by civilization may still discover new forms; and their activities are the more to be urged, since these insects are undoubtedly becoming extinct, as forests disappear and suitable habitats are more and more restricted.

Last year I reported P. vespoides (Cr.) a pollen- provisioning wasp and gave some additional facts in regard to its nesting habits and biology. Since that time I have further verified these facts, both in California and in Colorado, and have in addition taken many nests of a smaller species, P. edwardsii Cr.*, at and near Pasadena and Sierra Madre, California. This species according to Bradley ('22) is found in Utah, Nevada, California and Washington.

Male. Head and thorax shiny black wiith slight brown shading on the pleural sutures. Abdomen dorsally deep black-brown with the anterior portion of segments 4-7 faintly pale, hyaline, and with traces of a broken dark supraspiracular band; ventrally scarcely paler with similar hyaline areas and traces of small black spots in the postero-lateral corners of the middle segments. Legs deep brown Setae dirty white ringed with dark brown. Wings hyaline with pale brown longitudinal veins; the crossveins pale, except in the costo-apical region. Length of body 7 mm.; of wings 7 mm.

As a rule the genitalic organs of insects are mounted on standard glass slides. These slides have to be kept separate from the specimens they represent in a slide-box by themselves and for this reason there is always a chance of misplacement or loss due to eventual separation. Another point is that the all-glass slides are more easily breakable and are apt to “age” as the years go by.

Quite a little is known concerning the nesting habits of Anthidiine bees of the genus Anthidium and Dianthidium, but less of those of related genera, such as Callanthidium, Heteranthidium, Paranthidium, and Anthidiellum.

The work on the production of Trichogramma minutum Riley was instituted at the Chatham lahratory in January, 1928. What has been done to date has been largely of a preliminary nature but we feel justified in describing the methods being used because of the very general and widespread interest in this insect at the present time.

The larva of Vespa maculata spins for itself an entire cocoon, a cell lining, plus a lid to its cell. The number of these linings, placed one atop another, shows how often the cell has been occupied by these young wasps. The masses of hard, chalky, red material found in each cell also show by their number how many times the compartment has been used. Each silken lining can be peeled off ; each bag is complete, and at its bottom is this hardened mass of excrement. When one makes a cross-section of the nest, one finds mass upon mass at the bottom of the cells, but each mass is distinct, separated from the others by this tissue.

This black cherry aphid is common in nearly all localities in Utah where cherries are grown and causes many of the apical leaves to curl. Small numbers of this species remain on the cherry leaves throughout the summer at Brigham City and Farmington, but are present in much greater numbers during the spring.

According to Mr. A. B. Gahan this species is “close to (Hyperteles) Tetrastichus neuroteri Ashm., but the types of that species have two erect bristles on the submarginal vein, the hind tibiae mostly black, and the funicile joints not much longer than broad.”

Palpi head, thorax and primaries light brownish ochreous, the latter deepest in color along the basal half of costa. Maculation very indistinct, indicated merely in a shade of color slightly deeper than that of the remainder of the wing; orbicular recumbent, oval, reniform rather small, upright; t. a. line scarcely perceptible, rounded outwardly; t. p. line fairly clear, even, parallel to outer margin to beyond cell, bending inward strongly to base of vein 2, and then perpendicular to inner margin with a slight outward angle in the fold; two pale points on each side of this line on costa and another siimilar one above reniform; traces of a dark submarginal band, most distinct on costa where it forms a slight apical dark blotch; faint broken smoky terminal line; fringes dirty whiite, cut by a darker line near base.

Related to crassipes Meigen, to which it traces in my key (Tr. Royal Can. Inst., XV. 252, 1926). It is readily distinguished by the wholly black posterior femora, presence of abundant erect black hair on the upper surface of the anterior tarsi and in having the basal segment of the anterior tarsi shorter than the following three segments instead of longer than the apical four segments. Length 4.75 mm.

The following contribution is supplementary and complementary to a more extensive paper recently published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. An elucidation of the terminology and definitions of the higher categories employed may be found therein.

I take pleasure in naming this species and an hereinafter to be described species of Saprinus after Prof. H. E. Jaques of the Iowa Wesleyan College. The present paper is the result of the studies necessitated hy the specimens of Histeridae sent to me by Prof. Jaques for determination. The types of all the new species and abberrations are in the collection of the author.

The moth Anisota manitobensis was described by Dr. J. McDunnough of Ottawa in “The Canadian Entomologist” (Vol. LIII, No. 4) from four specimens taken by Mr. N. Criddle at Aweme, Manitoba. The early stages of this moth have been unknown up to the present. I have recently had the opportunity of studying these and the following notes are offered as a result.
