Infra red and electron spin resonance studies of clays representative of the sedimentary evolution of the Basin of Autun

Abstract

Three samples have been selected to represent the sedimentary variations of the Basin of Autun. IR and ESR techniques have been used to study the sheet composition of the different kinds of clays. The kaolinites are fire clays with two different degrees of crystallinity. The illites have a muscovite origin and belong to the 1 M polytype with mainly tetrahedral Al3+ and Fe3+ substitutions but also with some octahedral Fe3+ substitutions. The dioctahedral phyllosilicates contain mostly divalent and trivalent octahedral substitutions.

Trois échantillons ont été choisis pour représenter les variations sédimentaires dans le Bassin d'Autun. Les techniques IR et ESR ont été utilisées pour étudier la composition du feuillet des différents types d'argiles. Les kaolinites sont des fire clays presentant deux différents degrés de cristallinité. Les illite sont issues des muscovites et appartiennent au polytype 1 M, caractérisé surtout par des substitutions Al3+ et Fe3+ tétraédriques, mais aussi par des substitutions Fe3+ octaédriques. Les phyllites dioctaédriques présentent surtout des substitutions octaédriques di- et trivalentes.

Drei Tonproben wurden ausgewählt, um den unterschiedlichen sedimentären Bereich im Bassin d'Autun zu representieren. Zur Untersuchung der verschiedenen Tone auf ihren Mineralgehalt wurden die IR und die ESR-Methoden angewendet. Die Kaolingruppe ist durch Fire-clay Minerale mit unterschiedlichen Kristallinitätsgrad vertreten. Die Illite stammen von Muskovit und gehören zum 1M Polytyp und sind vor allem durch Substitution von tetraedrischem Al3+ u. Fe3+ aber auch durch oktaedrische Fe3+-Substitution charakterisiert. Die dioktaedrischen Phyllosilikate weisen vor allem zwei- und dreiwertige oktaedrische Substitutionen auf.

Se han seleccionado tres muestras para representar las variaciones sedimentarias en la cuenca de Autun. Se han empleado las técnicas IR y ESR para estudiar la composición laminar de las distintas clases de arcillas. Las caolinitas son arcillas refractarias con distintos grados de cristalinidad. Las ilitas tienen un origen muscovita y pertenecen al politipo 1 M, con sustituciones Al3+ y Fe3+ principalmente tetraédricas, pero también con algunas sustituciones de Fe3+ octaédricas. Las filitas dioctaédricas contienen mayormente sustituciones octaédricas bivalentes y trivalentes.
