Epidemiology and Infection is a fully open access journal publishing original reports and reviews on all aspects of infection in humans and animals. Emphasis is given to the epidemiology, prevention and control of infectious diseases, but coverage includes microbiology, virology, immunology, tropical infections, food hygiene, statistics and the clinical, social and public health aspects of disease. The journal is in its 151st volume and has an Impact Factor of 4.2 and a CiteScore of 5.6.
The outgoing Editor-in-Chief of the journal is Professor Norman Noah, who will remain in post until the end of 2023. We will ensure that there will be a smooth transition for whoever is taking the post.
The Editor-in-Chief's role is to be responsible for the content of the journal and the strategy for its future direction. This will involve overall responsibility for the peer review process; commissioning articles; overseeing the work of the Editorial Board and taking responsibility for the scientific accuracy and validity of the content.
We are looking for an established academic with a strong publication record in and knowledge of the field. They will be an experienced peer reviewer, with strong critical analysis and appraisal skills and will have prior editorial experience. It would be ideal for the candidate to have some understanding of the open access and open research landscape and have an active interest in standards of peer review and publication ethics.

Editorial responsibilities
The editorial responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief will include:
- Shaping the strategic direction of the journal, in cooperation with Cambridge, and the journal’s Editors.
- Developing and/or updating the journal’s editorial policy, in cooperation with Cambridge and the journal’s Editors.
- Building reputation and strength through quality of content, to ensure the journal grows successfully.
- Having overall responsibility for the quality and rigour of the content published in the journal.
- Organizing and managing the editorial office, with support from Cambridge.
- Managing the peer review process using Scholar One system, in accordance with Cambridge’s ethical guidelines and with the support of the Editorial Office.
- Making final article acceptance decisions on assigned manuscripts.
- Working with members of an active Editorial Board, recruiting new members where needed to ensure the board reflects the breadth and diversity of the field.
- Attending relevant conferences and annual editorial meetings.
- Representing and promoting the journal globally and at international events where the Editor might be in attendance (e.g., workshops, symposia, conferences).
- Commissioning content for submission to the journal and overseeing the journal’s special issue pipeline.
Support
The Editor-in-Chief is supported by a peer review administrator, 11 highly qualified Associate Editors specialising in various relevant disciplines, and an international Editorial Board. They will work closely with the Publisher and Marketer at Cambridge.
Term
The Editor-in-Chief will serve for an initial 5-year term (2024-2028) starting on 1 January 2024, with the option of renewing for another term.
Honorarium and other benefits
The Editor-in-Chief will receive an annual honorarium in the range of £8,000 - £10,000 depending on experience.
Cambridge will also reimburse reasonable pre-agreed expenses for journal-related activities (e.g., annual board meeting, conference attendance).
