The Collapse of Glossina tachinoides (Diptera: Glossinidae) Populations in Two Peridomestic Agroecosystems in the Nsukka Area of Anambra State, Nigeria

Abstract

The collapse of Glossina tachinoides populations, within a 27-month period of weekly sampling by means of unbaited biconical traps, in two peridomestic agroecosystems is described. Consistent removal of parous flies through trapping and low recruitment of young flies into the population, were largely responsible for unabated decline in the apparent density of both G. tachinoides populations. Reduction in the size of the resident pig population to below five pigs/week/agroecosystem triggered the collapse of both tsetse populations. Some ecological implications of these findings and their possible application in tsetse control are discussed.

Résumé

L'involution d'une population de Glossina tachinoides, en moins de 27 mois, à la suite d'une capture hebdomadaire réalisée au moyen de pièges biconiques non-appâtes, est étudiée dans deux agroécosystèmes péridomestiques. La décroissance soutenue de la densité apparente des populations de G. tachinoides dans les deux localités est attribuable, d'une part au retrait des vieilles mouches par piègeage et, d'autre part, à un recrutement peu élevé de jeunes mouches. Une réduction de la population porcine à 5 individus par semaine et par agroécosystèmes, déclenche l'involution des populations de glossines. L'interêt écologique de ces résultats et son application à la lutte contre les glossines est discutée.
