Cowpea antixenosis to the pod sucking bug, Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stal. (Hemiptera: Coreidae)

Abstract

Seven cowpea cultivars and a susceptible and two resistant checks were evaluated for their preference by Clavigralla tomentosicollis for oviposition and feeding under free-choice condition in the screenhouse and under no-choice in mesh cages. Female bugs had no distinct ovipositional preference for any of the test cultivars than the susceptible check. There was a distinct preference for egg laying on the undersurface of the leaves than on the other plant parts.

The susceptible check was more preferred for feeding by the bug than the other test cultivars. Thus, percentage seed damage was significantly reduced on the test cultivars than the susceptible check. There was no significant difference in percentage seed damage between the free-choice and the no-choice tests among the test cultivars except TVu 1890 (the resistant check) and Ife Brown (the susceptible check). The implications of the results are discussed.

Résumé

Sept plants de soja, un susceptible et deux vérifications résistantes furent évalués pour leur préférence par les Clavigralla tomentosicollis pour la ponte et l'alimentation dans la condition de choix délibéré en serre et dans l'absence de condition de choix dans les cages en mailles. Les parasites femelles n'avaient pas de préférence distincte pour les pontes sur aucun des plants d'essai que pour la vérification susceptible. Il y a une préférence pour pondre les oeufs sur le revers des feuilles que sur les autres parties de la plante.

La vérification susceptible est plus préféré pour l'alimentation du parasite que les autres plants d'essai. Ainsi le pourcentage des grains détruits était significativement réduit sur les plants d'essai vue sur les vérifications susceptibles. Il n'y a pas de différence remarquables en pourcentage des grains détruits entre les essais de choix délibérés et ceux d'absence de choix parmi les plants d'essai à l'exception du TVu 1890 (la vérification résistante) et de Ife Brown (la vérification susceptible). Les implications du résultat son discutées.
