Saurian malaria in Kenya: Description of ten new species from West Pokot District

Abstract

During investigations into the epidemiology of malaria of lizards in Kenya, Giemsa-stained smears made from the peripheral blood, liver and spleen of hand-caught lizards from West Pokot district were examined for the presence of Plasmodium species. Ten new species were found and described. These are Plasmodium sapaaensis, P. kyaii, P. kachelibaensis, P. icipeensis, P. gloriai, P. odhiamboi, P. bowiei, P. kaninii, P. kadogoi and P. adunyinkai.

P. sapaaensis was found to be related to P. mabuiae, P. kadogoi to P. rhadinurum, P. kaninii to P. minasense (s. Telford) and P. adunyinkai to P. maculilabre. P. kyaii and P. kachelibaensis have distinct characteristics which distinguish them from the Plasmodium species in the tropiduri group reported so far.

Four species i.e. P. icipeensis, P. odhiamboi, P. gloriai and P. bowiei, exhibited peculiar characteristics most especially their effect on the white cells. They were therefore constituted into the “Kenyan” group.

Lors de nos enquêtes épidémiologiques sur le paludisme saurien au Kenya, les étalements minces du sang périphérique, du foie et de la rate des lézards capturés à la main dans le District du Pokot de l'Ouest (Kenya) et colorés au Giemsa ont été examinés pour la recherche des espèces de Plasmodium. 10 espèces nouvelles ont été trouvées et décrites. Ce sont Plasmodium sapaanensis, P. kyaii, P. kachelibaensis, P. icipeensis, P. gloriai, P. odhiamboi, P. bowiei, P. kaninii, P. kadogoi et P. adunyinkai.

P. sapaaensis avait présenté des caractères identiques à ceux de P. mabuiae, P. kadogoi avait montré des caractères semblable à ceux de P. rhadinurum, P. kananii ressemble à P. minasense (S. Telford) et P. adunyinkai à P. maculilabre. P. kyai et P. kachelibaensis ont montré des caractéristiques distincts qui les différencient des espèces de Plasmodium du groupe tropiduri.

Quatre espèces à titre d'exemple P. icipiensis, P. odhiamboi, P. ghriaiet P. bowiei ont présenté des caractéristiques particulières plus spécialement leur effect sur les cellules blanches. Celles-ci, par conséquent, ont été classées parmi le groupe “kenyan”.
