1. It is a fact that United Brands paid bribes to Central American governments to quell peasant complaints regarding its monopoly of arable land, a charge which only came to light in 1975 when United Brands pleaded guilty to charges that it had conspired to pay $2.5 million to a prominent Honduran official in return for (1) reducing die export tax on bananas and (2) a 20-year extension of its lease on certain favorable terms.
