In this paper, which was presented at the Quadripartite Meeting of the Institutes of Navigation in Rome, 11–14. May 1970, the author describes the precise acoustic navigation systems designed for use with submersible vehicles as distinct from typical cruising submarines. With recent technical advances in position finding a whole new range of underwater tasks for the submersible has been opened up.
