Call for Papers

The Journal of Public Policy is a high-impact general journal seeking to build connections between Political Economy of Development (PED) and the study of public policy. To this end JPP will sponsor a virtual workshop on Zoom in September 2022 led by two members of JPP’s editorial team - Anjali Thomas (JPP field editor for Political Economy) and Dan Honig (JPP Editorial Board member).

This workshop will focus on providing critical feedback in expectation of submission to JPP for review and possible publication. The workshop will incorporate detailed comments from the workshop organizers as well as a designated discussant. We seek papers that address research questions that relate to the field of political economy of development, broadly defined, and that also have policy relevance. We specifically encourage manuscripts that focus on developing country public service provision, bureaucratic performance, foreign aid, citizen-state relations, gender disparities, internal migration, and urbanization although we are open to all areas of PED. We encourage co-authored manuscripts and manuscripts that feature junior scholars.

We will give priority to manuscripts that are at a more developed stage of completion. Our goal is to have at least three, but no more than four, fully developed manuscript drafts discussed at the workshop. After the workshop, authors will be encouraged to submit their manuscripts for review at JPP, though taking part in a workshop cannot guarantee publication.

Submissions should contain the following:

  • Title of the manuscript
  • Names and contact details of authors
  • A detailed abstract and summary of the manuscript (up to 500 words) including a description of the empirical strategy and any results, and a timeline for completion.
  • 5-10 pages of the manuscript for preview. Preview can be from any section or sections of the manuscript the authors choose. For those with full draft manuscripts (which are NOT required for consideration), the full manuscript can also be submitted with a cover note indicating what 5-10 pages reviewers should focus on.

The deadline for submissions is the 15th of June 2022

Submissions should be sent to jpubpolicyeditors@psu.edu.

Authors will be notified in early August to schedule the workshop, tentatively scheduled for the 12th of September 2022.

If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact athomas424@gatech.edu or dan.honig@ucl.ac.uk.
