Extract

Through a detailed study of the reflexive and emphatic particles in Persian and some comparison with other languages, it is suggested that the reflexive and emphatic, although homonymous in many languages, have quite distinct syntactic and semantic underlying structures. On the basis of this, a proposal for further exploration is presented for the study of the particle self in English, within the scope of generative-transformational theory.
