Cambridge University Press is inviting applications for the position of
Editor of Modern Asian Studies
Modern Asian Studies publishes cutting-edge research articles on the history, social anthropology, sociology, political science, and cultures of modern Asia. Covering all the regions of Asia, including Maritime Asia, and their interconnections, the journal particularly welcomes articles which deploy interdisciplinary and comparative research methods.
Since its inception in 1967, Modern Asian Studies has specialised in the publication of longer monographic essays whose theoretical claims are supported by rich empirical data. It also carries substantial synoptic review essays which summarise and critique the current state of a field of study, and it publishes special issues, forums, and roundtable discussions which explore topical themes in depth and from a number of perspectives.
Professor Joya Chatterji, who edited the journal for almost 15 years, most recently with Dr Norbert Peabody, has now retired and we are inviting applications from those interested in taking on the editorship of the journal for an initial term of five years. It is envisaged that the new Editor(s) will ‘shadow’ Norbert from June until September 2021 when he will also step down, although there is some flexibility to extend the handover period if necessary.
We are open to applications from individuals or editorial partnerships based anywhere in the world. The successful candidate(s) will have a clear and exciting vision for the journal’s future development and the energy, commitment and standing to realise that vision.

Covering letters should outline how the applicant(s) would approach the editorship, including:
• thoughts on the future content and strategic direction of Modern Asian Studies, development of the journal’s international profile and aims and scope
• the day to day running of the journal editorial office
• financial and administrative support required from the Press*
• an indication of the support available (if any) from the applicant’s home institution, including financial or administrative support and time allowed for journal work
• details of any prior journals experience
The total document should comprise no more than five pages.
