1 Saunders, the cook at the weather station, had been shot and killed by Pollard in selfdefence on 14 December 1950, after he had become violent and threatened the lives of members of the staff.

2 This party had been taken to Pond Inlet by aircraft in April 1951 to film Eskimo activities. They had spent the winter of 1950–51 among the Eskimos on the western side of Hudson Bay.
