Lithium Treatment in Schizophrenia and Schizo-Affective Disorders

Summary

Between one third and one half of schizophrenic patients appear to benefit from treatment with lithium carbonate. An even higher proportion of schizo-affective patients benefit some showing complete recovery. Current unfavourable views on the use of lithium in schizophrenia are contested. Lithium as well as neuroleptics have a place in the treatment of schizophrenia.
