‘You are instructed to prepare a report …’ How to make sound decisions about whether to accept or decline medico-legal work

Summary

Medico-legal training received during core and specialist training in psychiatry may not equip a consultant psychiatrist newly appointed in the National Health Service with an ability to decide whether to accept or decline requests to prepare medico-legal reports. This paper draws together some of the key principles, legislation and knowledge which will help guide such decisions.
