May I first say how eager I was to accept this invitation ? Secondly I should like to say that I followed my father into this trade and, in those days—the 1930's—there were, to my knowledge, only three roads open to mathematicians. When I discussed this matter with my father he said, “You could go into the Civil Service, but you will find it very difficult because you have to write what you say and you say far too much.” “The second thing you can do,” he said, “is to be an actuary, but you will have to be good.” I am very happy to be a schoolmaster. I may say at this stage that I think there is a terrible waste in this room. Looking round, I see enormous headmaster possibilities in you all. You have the tremendously exciting look !
