We believe that text and data mining (TDM) is a powerful research tool with incredible potential. The use of machines and algorithms allows for analysis of information at scales, scopes, and levels of complexity that have previously been impossible to achieve. We want to help reduce barriers to this kind of research where we can, and we know from our research communities that legal uncertainty about TDM, such as when it is permitted and for what purposes, can be one such barrier.

Our Terms of Use therefore permit text and data mining of Cambridge Core content for any non-commercial purpose, as long as you have lawful access to the content you wish to mine.

Do I need to sign an agreement or licence to carry out text and data mining (TDM) on Cambridge Core content?

No, you are permitted to carry out TDM on any Cambridge Core content you have lawful access to, without the need for any additional agreements or licences.

What does this policy mean for open access content?

Open access content provided under creative commons licences can still be used in all the ways permitted by those licences.

How can I access content for the purpose of TDM?

Content can be accessed and downloaded via the Cambridge Core website. We do not currently provide an API for accessing Cambridge Core content. If you need help accessing a large amount of content for a text and data mining project, please contact openresearch@cambridge.org.

Can I use bots or other automated methods to download content?

No, we employ technical protection measures to protect the integrity of our servers, which may be triggered if you access a lot of Cambridge Core content in a short period of time. If you plan to download a large amount of content in a short period of time, please get in touch with openresearch@cambridge.org first, so that we can make sure you don’t run into problems with our technical protection measures.

Can you provide content in other formats, for example full-text XML?

In many cases yes. Please get in touch with openresearch@cambridge.org if you are interested in carrying out text and data mining using content formats not provided on the Cambridge Core website.

Can I share or publish the results of TDM analysis?

Yes, you are welcome to share or publish any new information or knowledge generated by text and data mining of Cambridge Core content, provided that you do so on a non-commercial basis unless (and solely to the extent) expressly permitted by applicable law..

Can I share or publish excerpts of the original content I analysed?

Only in ways that are allowed by applicable copyright laws, or unless you have prior written permission from Cambridge.
