Advancing the LOUD+FAIR Data Principles in Eastern Mediterranean Archaeological Research: Insights from the PERAIA Project

Abstract

Over the last decades, archaeology has experienced a transformative revolution in the wake of the digital that has shaped the ways in which it is researched and published. A key concept, openness, has emerged from this shift. This article explores digital approaches to data management conducted within the framework of the PERAIA project, which provides a comprehensive open database and a web application that integrate data on archaeological heritage spanning from late prehistory to antiquity, covering the Aegean area (Crete) and northeastern Libya / northwestern Egypt (Marmarica). We used a methodology that integrates legacy data with historical aerial and satellite imagery to identify archaeological features in the landscape, thereby enriching them with associated environmental and historical (meta)data. Our open data practices reflect a commitment to open science, in which digital technology and the LOUD+FAIR principles have been at the core of the project to achieve data openness, fair access to information, and enhanced data reusability potential.

En las últimas décadas, la arqueología ha experimentado una revolución transformadora a raíz de lo digital, que ha modificado las formas en que se investiga y publica. De este cambio ha surgido un concepto clave: la “apertura.” Este trabajo explora los enfoques digitales llevados a cabo para la gestión de datos en el marco del proyecto PERAIA, el cual ofrece una completa base de datos abierta y una aplicación web que integra y proporciona acceso a información sobre el patrimonio arqueológico que abarca desde la Prehistoria Tardía hasta la Antigüedad, de la zona del Egeo (Creta) y el noreste de Libia / noroeste de Egipto (Marmárica). Para lograrlo, hemos desarrollado una metodología que integra el uso de datos heredados junto con imágenes históricas aéreas y de satélite que sirven para identificar elementos arqueológicos en el paisaje, enriqueciéndolos con (meta)datos medioambientales e históricos asociados. Nuestras prácticas de gestión de datos reflejan nuestro compromiso con la ciencia abierta, donde las tecnologías digitales y los principios LOUD+FAIR han sido el núcleo central del proyecto, con el fin de promover la apertura de los datos, el acceso equitativo a la información y un mayor potencial de reutilización.
