In the main body of the text, East Asian names are given in the customary order in which family name comes before personal name. In case of Asian Americans and others, I reverted to the usual order of first name followed by family name. In bibliographic entries, no differences were made between East Asian and other names.
I have added macrons marking long vowels in Japanese where appropriate but dropped them for places or names like Tokyo or Hokkaido that are well known to English-language readers.
