The ‘off licence’ use of drugs is common in the UK. One such use is thetreatment of bipolar disorder with sodium valproate. This paper reviews theevidence for using the licensed alternative, valproate semisodium, under theheadings of licence, efficacy, pharmacokinetics and tolerability.
