Summary

A rationale for maintaining the existence of learned journals is put forwardon the 343rd anniversary of the first such journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, and itis argued that the main aim of such journals has hardly changed since thistime. The new-look British Journal of Psychiatry isintended to educate and instruct, and even entice readers from thefunctional and far less romantic online version.
