Summary

This chapter provides an overview of potential considerations for individuals considering postdoctoral training in psychology. This includes an overview of information on the various issues related to determining whether postdoctoral training is right for you, as well as guidance related to how to obtain a fellowship that meets your personal and professional needs. Advantages and disadvantages of obtaining postdoctoral training are reviewed, as are considerations in the decision-making process on whether to pursue a postdoctoral position.For individuals who have chosen to seek postdoctoral training, the chapter provides an overview of steps for locating, applying for, evaluating, and securing a suitable fellowship. Navigating the postdoctoral search and decision making process is complex. This chapter is intended to provide a sufficient overview of postdoctoral training such that readers will be able to better weigh personal and professional considerations and arrive at the best decision for their situation.
