Dear Readers,

This issue marks the beginning of the 40th anniversary of Applied Psycholinguistics. It also marks the beginning of my term as editor, and serves as an occasion to acknowledge the contributions that Martha Crago has made to this journal over the past 17 years. Martha, who is currently Vice-Principal for Research and Innovation at McGill University, joined AP as co-editor with Usha Goswami (Professor of Cognitive Developmental Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge) in 2001, and became sole editor in 2005. Under Martha’s leadership, AP has thrived as a premier venue for the dissemination of psycholinguistic studies of language development and processing across languages and learners, publishing research that crosses disciplinary, geographical, and linguistic boundaries. At Martha’s invitation, I served as an associate editor for the journal from 2011 to 2015, and have appreciated her collaborative approach to the work of the journal, her thoughtful and generous mentoring, and her focus on high-quality, ethical editorial practices. I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to collaborate with the editorial team, Cambridge University Press, and scholars of applied psycholinguistics to shape AP’s future.

General trends in scholarship toward increased openness and transparency, along with global trends in migration and multilingualism and recent theoretical and methodological developments in the fields associated with the journal, make this an exciting time to serve in this capacity at AP. It is a privilege to be joined in this work by an outstanding team of associate editors: Flavia Adani (Universität Potsdam), Susanne Brouwer (Radboud Universiteit), Miguel Simonet (University of Arizona), Xiuli Shelley Tong (University of Hong Kong), Annie Tremblay (University of Kansas), and Yuuko Uchikoshi Tonkovich (University of California, Davis). I am deeply grateful to all of them, and to AP’s editorial board, the journal’s reviewers and authors, and Editorial Manager Susy Binstock, for their contributions to the success of AP. I look forward to our work together.
