We feel that Mr. Diamond’s article in your March 1960 number Reference Diamond 1 calls for some comment, in that (a) “Station Centrale” was in operation from 1949 to 1951, and not from 1949–50 as stated in Tables I and II and in the text on p. 560; (b) The co–ordinates of “Station Centrale” are given incorrectly in Table I, the correct position being lat. 70° 54′ N., long. 40° 37′ W.; (c) The location of “Eismitte”–“Station Centrale” in Figure 1 is incorrect, it should be at the intersection of the routes of Wegener’s expedition and of Project Jello; (d) Table I omits from the list of routes of major expeditions that followed by Expéditions Polaires Françaises (1948–1953)—this surely should have been included even though that of Project Jello (1955) coincides from “Station Centrale” to Camp VI with that of E.P.F.
These few comments do not alter the value of Mr. Diamond’s work, particularly as regards accumulation values.
Finally, we have a few remarks not directly concerned with the location of Expéditions Polaires Françaises stations and routes which we would like to mention: the surface area of the ice sheet is not 1,650,000 km.2 but 1,726,000 km.2; the co-ordinates of “Eismitte” are lat. 71° 11′ N., long. 39° 56′ W.; and the reference list omits Benson’s paper Reference Benson 2 on the work of Project Jello.
