This book is dedicated to all those who grapple with climate mitigation as a political issue and seek to do better through deliberation, sharing ideas and learning, and determination. What the approach taken in this book strongly suggests is that it is better to grapple than not – and my sincere hope is that it will offer some helpful and thought-provoking insights into how to do so in more politically productive ways.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to those who have been kind enough to give me such considered and useful feedback on various versions of the book: Simon Caney, Ben Clift, Peter Newell, Matthew Paterson, Lena Rethel, and Ben Richardson. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), and grant number EP/S029575/1. Although this book was not directly enabled by this funding, some of the ideas and motivations to write emerged during in-depth and fascinating debates and discussions with UKERC colleagues.
This book is dedicated to Ed and Izzy, who sustain and give meaning to my life, and to Suzie, who I miss every minute of every day.
