The Glaciological Research Sub-Committee beg leave to report to the Committee of the British Glaciological Society on the work of the Sub-Committee for the year ending 8 March 1961.

At its meeting on 8 March 1960, the Committee of the British Glaciological Society elected as members of the Sub-Committee for the year 1960–61 R. J. Adie, J. W. Glen, J. F. Nye, G. de Q. Robin, W. H. Ward. W. V. Lewis, Chairman of Committee of the British Glaciological Society was automatically re-elected.

Work of the Sub-Committee

The Sub-Committee has met and has dealt with many requests for assistance by correspondence. Dr. Glen has attended a meeting of the Glaciological Panel of the Committee on Polar Research of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A. as an invited guest in March 1961, and other members of the Sub-Committee acted as a Sub-Committee to discuss proposals for British work on the Greenland Ice Sheet in connection with the proposed International Glaciological Expedition to Greenland. For this purpose Mr. Ward attended a meeting with Danish Government representatives and the International Glaciological Expedition to Greenland in Copenhagen recently.

Requests for Advice

Requests for advice have been received from 20 expeditions visiting glaciers in Europe, Arctic North America, South America and New Guinea, and technical notes and advice have been sent to them as well as to others formulating research programmes.

In addition several libraries have been sent technical notes in response to requests.

Reports Received

Reports have been received from the following:

Imperial College Jan Mayen Expedition, 1959, interim report on glaciology, deposited by P. Smith.

Report of the Glaciological Party of the Cambridge Colombian Expedition 1959 to the Sierra Nevada del Cocuy, deposited by R. Smyth.

Expedition to Svartisen, Norway, 1960, deposited by W. H. Theakstone.

General Remarks

The Sub-Committee is always glad to hear from those planning to do glaciological work, particularly at an early stage when the programme is still flexible. They are also very glad to have reports from expeditions, whether they have advised them or not, on glaciological work that has been accomplished. They also wish to encourage all such expeditions to send reports to all the World Data Centres in Glaciology.
