Athletics, army recruitment and heroisation: L. Sep. Fl. Flavillianus of Oinoanda

Abstract

This article presents an inscribed statue base discovered at Oinoanda by Professor Martin Ferguson Smith in 2002. The new inscription is placed in its historical context, and the commentary traces the implications for our understanding of Roman army recruitment, the role of the civic élite in responding to the demands of the imperial government and the practice of heroisation in the competition for honour among the notables who were also the city's victorious athletes.

Bu makalede, Prof. Martin Ferguson Smith tarafından, 2002 yılında, Oinoanda'da bulunan yazıtlı bir heykel kaidesi sunulmaktadır. Yeni yazıt kendi tarihsel konteksi içinde yer almakta ve bu makalede yer alan yorum, Roma ordusunun güçlenmesini, kentteki elitlerin imparatorluk hükümetinin taleplerine yanıt vermede oynadıkları rolü, aynı zamanda kentin zafer kazanmış atletleri de olan ileri gelenleri arasında yapılan onur yarışmalarındaki kahramanlaştırma uygulamasını anlamamıza yardımcı olacak imaları içermektedir.
