Earlier this year, the American Journal of Law & Medicine (“AJLM”) had the great privilege of helping host Boston University’s (“BU”) Health Law Celebration, an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of BU’s Health Law Program and honoring the Program’s esteemed founders, Fran Miller, George Annas and Wendy Mariner. In conjunction with that event, AJLM had the distinct honor of publishing reflections on the development of the field from Miller, Annas, and Mariner, as well as from other health law scholars these luminaries inspired. Most of those reflections can be found in our journal’s fiftieth volume. We were fortunate to receive contributions from many esteemed scholars — more than we had capacity to publish in our dedicated special issue. However, we wanted to ensure that these authors’ pieces saw the light of day, so we have included them here in our summer issue.

We also wanted to take a moment here to honor George Annas, who sadly passed away on May 30, 2025. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. Annas was a trailblazer in the field of both public health and health law, and was an invaluable contributor to the development of BU’s esteemed Health Law Program. While some on the AJLM staff may not have had the opportunity to meet or learn from George Annas directly, we all benefited from the foundation he laid. We are confident that the ripples of his work will continue to echo into the future of the field and the tireless work of the health law community. He will be missed but never forgotten.
