Abstract

Purpose

Using a cross-sectional design, this study aimed to examine the associations between personal resources and emotional exhaustion, with anxiety as a potential variable consistent with a mediating role.

Methods

Data was collected in Lebanon over a six month period using validated self-report questionnaires. Workers aged 18 to 64 years (N = 295) were recruited using a non-randomized snowball sampling approach. Multiple regression and mediation analyses were conducted.

Results

The findings indicate that personal resources (sleep quality (b = −0.224, 95% CI [−0.286, −0.165]), emotional intelligence (b = −0.061, 95% CI [−0. 112, −0.007]), and internal locus of control (b = −0.216, 95% CI [−0. 351, −0.075]) were all negatively associated with anxiety, supporting Hypothesis 1. Sleep quality (b = 0.073, 95% CI [−0.125, −0.029]) and internal locus of control (b = −0.071, 95% CI [−0.140, −0.018])) were also associated with lower emotional exhaustion through their associations with lower anxiety levels (i.e., indirect association via anxiety). In contrast, emotional intelligence (b = −0.020, 95% CI [−0.046, 0.002]) showed no significant indirect association with emotional exhaustion (i.e., no indirect association via anxiety).

Conclusion

The results of this study highlight that not all personal resources have uniformly positive effects.

Please find enclosed a manuscript entitled: Exploring the Links Between Workers’ Personal Resources, Sleep Quality, and Emotional Exhaustion During Challenging Times: Anxiety as a Mediating Factor by Annick Parent-Lamarche and Sabine Saade. This manuscript is an original study with unpublished material and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Both authors have been personally and actively involved in the work leading to the report and all relevant ethical safeguards have been met.

In this study, we wanted to examine the relationship between sleep quality, emotional intelligence, locus of control, and emotional exhaustion, with anxiety as a mediator. Data were collected in Lebanon over a six-month period in 2022. The sample was randomly selected from community workers aged 18 to 64 years. A combination of online and in-person snowball sampling methods was used. Participants (N = 295) completed the survey under conditions of confidentiality and were offered a chance to win cash prizes. The sample consisted of 60.68% women, with an average age of 33.17 years. Multiple regression and mediation analyses were conducted. The findings indicate that both sleep quality and internal locus of control were associated with lower levels of anxiety and emotional exhaustion. This was not the case for emotional intelligence. Both sleep quality and internal locus of control were found to reduce emotional exhaustion by lowering anxiety levels. Although overall emotional intelligence was not indirectly associated with emotional exhaustion, exploratory analyses revealed that the “use of emotion” dimension was associated with higher anxiety levels, whereas “regulation of emotion” was associated with lower anxiety levels and, indirectly linked to reduced emotional exhaustion. The results of this study highlight the complex role that personal resources play in mental health. Specifically, not all personal resources have uniformly positive effects. These findings highlight the need for organizations and healthcare professionals to target sleep quality, foster an internal locus of control, and promote emotional intelligence. Enhancing emotional regulation and the constructive use of emotions could be key strategies for improving psychological well-being.

The diversity of the sample is good, however, providing a sample characteristics table will be helpful to look at a quick summary of the diversity. The organization and flow of the paper can be enhanced, especially for the introduction and literature review to help readers follow the paper effectively.

The choice of analysis must be clearly stated whether to do a variance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) or co-variance based SEM. These two methods are different in their purpose of analysis. Give strong justification on why chose that SEM approach for further analysis.

Future research could explore how specific contextual factors (political instability, industry-specific pressures) moderate these relationships. Consider discussing how findings might apply to other populations experiencing chronic adversity.
